If you're managing a commercial lot or industrial yard upgrade, you're probably looking at cree pole lights. Specifically, the Cree Cameo series (SKUs LBL4, LBL8, LBL9). They're a solid choice for parking lots and pathways.
But here's the thing nobody tells you before the pallet arrives: specs on paper and reality don't always match.
I'm a quality compliance manager for a mid-sized facility management company. I review every lighting delivery before it hits our sites—roughly 200+ unique items annually. I've rejected about 12% of first deliveries in 2024 due to spec mismatches. This checklist is what I use. You should too.
When To Use This Checklist
Use this before you sign off on delivery of your Cree pole light order, or before your contractor mounts the first unit. It's for the moment between the PO being fulfilled and the installation being considered 'done'. If you skip this, you're gambling a re-do.
The 6-Point Inspection Checklist
1. Verify The Model Number Against The PO (Not The Box)
Sounds obvious. But in Q1 2024, we received a batch of 45 Cree pole lights where the outer carton said LBL9, but the unit inside was an LBL4. The box was mislabeled. Our installer almost put them up. The giveaway? The LBL9 has a different driver access panel.
Check: Open one unit. Confirm the model number on the driver label matches the PO. Don't trust the shipping carton.
2. Inspect The Color Temperature (CCT) Consistency
You ordered 4000K. But manufacturers have tolerances. Cree's standard tolerance is ±200K. That means one fixture could be 3800K and another 4200K and technically 'within spec'. On a wide lot, that's noticeable.
In 2022, we rejected a shipment of 30 Cree flood lights because 3 units were visibly warmer. We lit them all up side-by-side in the warehouse. The variance was only about 180K, but it looked sloppy.
Check: If you have a color meter, use it. If not, power up 2-3 units side-by-side before installation. If you see a difference, reject the batch.
3. Check The Driver Voltage Input Rating
This one bit me personally. I approved a shipment of Cree parking lot lights for a site that had 277V, no problem. But a different site on the same order had 480V. The drivers were all standard 120V-277V. We didn't catch it until the electrician showed up. That cost us a $1,200 rush order for new drivers and delayed the project by 10 days.
Check: Look at the driver input range. It's printed on the side. If your site runs 480V, make sure you order the multi-voltage tap version or specify it.
4. Examine The Lens And Gasket Seal
I have mixed feelings about gasket quality on some of these units. On one hand, Cree's design is generally solid. On the other, we had a case where 8 out of 60 units had a visibly pinched gasket right out of the box. The vendor said it was a 'shipping issue.' We rejected the 8 units.
If that gasket isn't perfect, you'll get condensation inside the lens within 6 months. Then you're replacing the whole unit under warranty, but the paperwork is a headache.
Check: Run your finger along the seal. Feel for any gaps or folds. Don't use them if the gasket looks misaligned.
5. Measure The Photocell Sensitivity (If Applicable)
Dusk to dawn mode is great, but photocell tolerances vary. I always test. We got a batch where 3 units triggered 'on' about 30 minutes earlier than the rest. It looked weird on the lot.
Per Cree's spec, the photocell is designed to trigger at 3-10 foot-candles. That's a wide range. Two fixtures side-by-side can easily behave differently.
Check: During commissioning, note if one light turns on noticeably earlier. If it does, swap the photocell or plan to adjust the timer.
6. Verify The Lumen Output Is Close To Spec
Everyone tells you to check specs. I only believed this after ignoring it once and eating an $800 mistake. We approved a new variant of a Cree linear fixture without verifying the actual lumens. The spec sheet said 18,000 lumens. Our light meter showed 15,500. The difference was way bigger than I expected.
The issue was the driver was set to a lower output mode. We had to re-configure 20 fixtures.
Check: If you have a light meter, take a reading. Or ask your contractor to do it. Expect roughly 5% variance. More than that, and something is wrong.
What To Do If You Find An Issue
If something fails the checklist, do not install it. Take photos. Note the model and serial number. Contact your supplier immediately. Most vendors will send a replacement if you catch it before installation.
Installing a defective unit voids the warranty on that specific fixture in some cases. Don't risk it.
I've seen too many project managers approve a 5-figure lighting order based on a quote alone. Then they're stuck with a mismatch or a failure. A 30-minute inspection saves a week of rework.
