Even the “instant-on” LED types have a fraction of a second delay, but more importantly, the motion sensor itself has a detection pattern and a “hold time.” Set the hold time too short, and the light turns off while you’re still walking down the driveway. Set it too long, and you waste energy.

A retrofit downlight (like a Cree “retrofit” trim) is designed to fit into an existing recessed can. The physical installation is easy: you twist it in. The hard part is making sure you have the right junction box and that the old wiring is safe. The answer is: It depends on the color temperature and foot-candles.
Most Cree office-grade downlights are 4000K (cool white) at around 3500 lumens. A snake plant (Sansevieria) is a low-light champion, but it prefers bright indirect light. In a typical office with a suspended ceiling (8-foot ceiling, 4-foot spacing on lights), a snake plant on a desk gets maybe 50-100 foot-candles. That’s survivable, but it won’t thrive. It will get leggy and pale.
If you use Cree’s 3000K (warm white) series in an accent fixture near the plant, you’ll get a better spectrum for growth. But the real trick is distance. A snake plant can survive in a low-light corner if it’s within 3-4 feet of a lamp. In my experience (and I’ve monitored one for six months), it stalls out if it’s more than 5 feet from the light source.
Pro tip from a non-botanist: If the leaves start stretching toward the light, it’s telling you it needs more. Move it closer to the window, or add a small Cree LED task light (like a smart bulb) pointed at it. (Which, honestly, is cheaper than buying a new plant every six months. 6. Why does my Cree LED flood light hum?
Humming usually means a forward-phase dimmer is being used with a trailing-edge driver, or vice versa.
Most Cree commercial flood lights (like the “Cree Flood Light” series) are designed for trailing-edge dimmers (also called electronic low-voltage dimmers). If you connect it to an old standard incandescent dimmer (a forward-phase dimmer), you get a 60Hz hum that’s maddening. I did this on a 12-unit parking lot project in 2021. 7. Is Cree going out of business? (A real question I hear a lot)
Short answer: no. Long answer: it’s complicated but not alarming.
In 2021, Cree’s LED lighting division was sold to Ideal Industries. The Cree brand name (for lighting) is now owned by Ideal, while Cree (the company) renamed itself to Wolfspeed and focuses on silicon carbide chips. So the “Cree Lighting” you buy today is a product from a different owner, but it uses the same engineering team and patents.
I get why people ask this. I had a client in 2023 who saw a headline and froze his $50,000 retrofit project. I showed him the Ideal Industries acquisition press release from 2021 and their financials. The project went ahead, and the product support has been fine.
