When I took over lighting purchasing for our 200-person company in 2022, I assumed all LED fixtures were basically the same. Just pick a wattage and a color temperature, right? The Cree high bay light seemed like a no-brainer for our warehouse: good brand, decent price on the catalog. But the first order taught me that identical specs from different fixtures can hide very different total costs. After processing 60–80 orders annually across 8 vendors, I learned to look past the unit price. Here’s what I wish someone told me before I bought those first 20 Cree high bay lights.

My first big lighting purchase was for our 8,000 sq ft warehouse. I compared Cree high bay lights (250W, 30,000 lumens) with two other brands. Cree’s quote was 15% higher, but the line item listed everything: driver, mounting bracket, shipping, even a free lumen maintenance report. The other vendor’s lower price? They left out the bracket and charged $45 per unit for “installation support” that turned out to be a phone call. (Should mention: I found that out after I’d already ordered 10 units from them. The “savings” disappeared when I added the bracket cost.)
That’s when I adopted the transparency-first approach. The vendor who lists all fees upfront—even if the total looks higher—usually costs less in the end. Cree’s catalog pricing (as of early 2025) includes detailed spec sheets with L70 life, input voltage range, and warranty terms. No hidden “application engineering” charges. That saved my reputation with the VP of Operations when the retrofit went exactly as quoted.
High bay vs. pole light: the decision that kept me up at night
I went back and forth between Cree high bay lights and Cree pole lights for our outdoor loading area for three weeks. The high bay option was cheaper per fixture, but needed a ceiling mount (we didn’t have trusses). The pole lights were designed for ground mounting — $185 each vs $145 for the high bay — but included the pole and base. On paper, high bay made sense: same lumen output, lower price. But my gut said the install complexity would eat the savings.
The surprise wasn’t the price difference. It was that the total installed cost for high bay lights came out 22% higher once I added labor for mounting brackets, conduit, and a delay for structural inspection. I ended up choosing the Cree pole lights — and the contractor finished in two days instead of four. (Oh, and the pole lights had a 10-year warranty versus 7 for the high bay. I should add that Cree’s warranty varies by product; verify current terms.)
Moving spotlights and studio spotlights: a different game
Our marketing team needed moving spotlights for a product launch event. They asked for “spotlight studio” fixtures — theatrical style. I knew Cree makes LED moving heads, but initially I tried to repurpose our standard pole lights. Bad idea. The “LED is LED” advice ignores the difference between general illumination and stage lighting. Cree’s studio spotlights (e.g., the moving spotlight series) include DMX control, color mixing, and dimming curves — things a pole light can’t do.
I have mixed feelings about paying $900 per unit for a moving spotlight versus $250 for a basic floodlight. On one hand, it’s 3.6× the cost. On the other, the event team ran it for 12 hours straight with zero heat issues, and the color consistency was perfect (Delta E < 2 across five units, per the spec sheet). If you need studio-grade output, don’t try to cut corners with a general-purpose fixture — the hidden costs of poor color rendering or flicker will embarrass you in front of the client.
Beware the “IPS panel vs LED” confusion
I’ve heard colleagues say “IPS panels are better than LED” when they’re comparing two different technologies — one is a display type, the other is a light source. This is a legacy misconception from the early 2010s when LCD backlighting was a separate purchase. Today, you can’t really compare them directly. In lighting, LED is the source; in monitors, IPS describes the panel type (which often uses LED backlighting). The real question is: are you buying a fixture or a display? If you’re shopping for Cree light bulbs, don’t get sidetracked by monitor specs. If you need a monitor, don’t use lighting catalogs. (I once mistakenly ordered “LED panels” thinking they were ceiling lights — they were LCD display panels. Cost us $600 in restocking fees.) Stick to the application.
When the transparency rule doesn’t apply
I’m a big advocate of upfront pricing, but it’s not always the whole story. Some legitimate vendors offer volume discounts or tiered pricing that only appears after negotiation. That’s fine — as long as they disclose the tiers. The red flag is when a quote says “starting from $X” and refuses to list what’s included. For Cree products, I’ve found that even the list price is usually close to what you’ll pay after a simple phone call. But always ask: “Can you send me a complete line-item quote with mounting, shipping, and warranty details?” If they hesitate, walk away.
