If you're about to buy Cree LEDs for a studio, warehouse, or custom build, this checklist is for you.

1. Define the application before you search "buy Cree LED"
Most buying mistakes happen before the PO is written.
What is the light actually going to do? For a warehouse aisle, you need high lumens, a narrow beam, and an IP rating that can handle dust and humidity. For a product photography corner, you care more about CRI, color temperature, and flicker-free output than raw brightness.
Write down: lumens, color temperature, CRI, beam angle, dimming requirements, operating temperature. If the numbers aren't on paper, you're shopping on hope.
Take it from someone who once ordered a batch of 4000K fixtures and then found out the client's spec required 3000K. The boxes were already on the truck.
2. Calculate total cost of ownership, not sticker price
Here's what you need to know: the cheapest quote is rarely the cheapest system.
In 2023, I compared two Cree LED fixture suppliers for a warehouse lighting upgrade. One quoted $14,200. The other quoted $12,800. I almost went with the cheaper one until I added up freight, mounting hardware, and setup fees. 3. Verify the datasheet like a skeptical buyer
Searching "Cree light bulbs LED" gives you a lot of results. Some are actual Cree products. Some are fixtures with "Cree-compatible" drivers. Some are cheap imports with a Cree logo in the product photo.
Cree publishes detailed specs for a reason. Use them.
Check the binning for chromaticity if you need consistent color across multiple fixtures. Check the rated life claim—if a datasheet doesn't include LM-80 and TM-21 data for the LED package, treat the lifetime number as marketing.
And don't assume all Cree bulbs are the same. A Cree-branded lamp is not the same as a bare Cree LED chip inside another fixture. Know which one you're actually buying.

4. Buy from authorized channels
Counterfeit LEDs are real. I don't have hard data on industry-wide counterfeit rates, but based on six years of orders, my sense is that suspiciously cheap listings are usually either fake, old-generation inventory, or from a liquidated lot.
At one point, a liquidator offered us "Cree" fixtures at 20% below the authorized distributor's price. The upside was about $1,800 in savings. The risk was receiving factory rejects or swapped drivers. I kept asking myself: is $1,800 worth potentially losing a client over a failed installation?

5. For spotlight photoshoots, use an orange spotlight on purpose
If you're setting up a spotlight photoshoot, an orange spotlight can produce a warm, dramatic look. But "orange" needs to be controlled. It's not just a gel color; it's a color temperature and a spectrum.
We built a temporary photo corner to shoot a client's seasonal menu. The client's brand orange had to match exactly. We used a Cree LED spotlight with an orange gel, then measured the output. The surprise wasn't the gel's color. It was how much the white balance changed after we swapped to a different spotlight model.

We built a 3x3 LED panel display for an exhibition booth. The LEDs were Cree XLamp XHP70s. The surprise wasn't the LED cost. It was the connectors and the constant-current drivers. Never expected them to take up 35% of the component budget.

- Using an orange spotlight without a white balance reference. Take a gray card reading on the same spot.
- Overdriving LEDs in a panel display. More current means more heat. More heat means a shorter service life.
- Buying "Cree-compatible" parts blindly. Verify driver compatibility with the exact product generation.
What was best practice in 2020 may not apply in 2025. The fundamentals haven't changed: define the job, verify the specs, count the real cost. But the execution has transformed. Five years ago, a custom panel display meant mixing components and hoping. In 2025, you can buy Cree LED light bulbs, chips, fixtures, and drivers through authorized channels with documented performance. Use that.
And if someone tells you all orange spotlights are the same, ask for their color meter readings. Then check their photoshoot calendar.
