Ceiling-mounted linear fixtures (like the LS series) are for higher ceilings—10 to 20 feet—where you need broader, more even coverage. They're also better for task lighting in work areas.
If you're replacing an existing downlight, stick with a downlight. Retrofitting with a linear fixture usually requires new mounting and wiring—more time, more cost. The Cree downlight series is solid for residential and commercial retrofits. But don't expect it to light up a warehouse.
When I say no to Cree
Here's where I've learned to push back:
- Large-scale outdoor floodlighting (like stadiums or large parking lots): Cree has products for this, but their outdoor range isn't as competitive vs. dedicated brands like Lithonia or Hubbell.
- High-density linear arrays (more than 4 fixtures end-to-end): The LS series can suffer from noticeable color shift at the edges when ganged. For seamless runs, I'd recommend a different product.
- Applications with extreme temperature fluctuations (like cold storage or outdoor sun-exposed areas): The LS series isn't designed for that. I've seen condensation issues in sealed fixtures after thermal cycling.
I know it's tempting to recommend one product across all projects. But being honest about when something doesn't work builds more trust than pretending it works everywhere. The client will thank you later—especially when they don't have to pay for a costly swap.

And whatever you do, always verify the spec sheet against your actual installation environment. Don't assume—like I did—that 'durable' means waterproof.
